Enjoy God?

The image of God which is imprinted on the soul has been clouded and does not perfectly bear the Divine likeness. Why? Because of the change disobedience made in people.

Yet, God can impress His own image once again.

Martin Luther is credited for saying, “The purpose of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”

I was surprised at the use of the word “enjoy”.

Another word is “cleave”.

In the Bible, “cleave” means a strong, inseparable connection.

You shall fear the LORD your God; him will you serve, and to him will you cleave.

These words are very strong. Do we want to be as close as possible to God? And do we find “enjoyment” in God?

God is the best there is and he particularly created man breathing the breath of life into him.

How close is our relationship with God?

What do these words mean to us?

Can we enjoy God?

What Happened to Adam?

Adam only speaks a few times in Genesis.
He speaks in response to seeing the woman:

This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Later, he answers the Lord’s question:

Where are you?

And Adam said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

These two statements are very different. He is not especially self aware in speaking of the woman. He states facts, gives her a name and explains why.

But in the second, he uses the word “I” four times. He has become extremely self aware and is only concerned with himself.

What happened between his two statements?

He ate the fruit of the one forbidden tree. The root of sin is selfishness to the exclusion of others.

This is exactly what Adam shows. His nakedness bothers him now because he feels disconnected from God, his wife, and nature itself.

Bow and Stand

When we encounter God, we naturally want to bow. And it is the right thing to do. We bow before the great God who made all things. He sent his Son, Jesus to save us.

But God wants us to stand before Him. And He wants us to stand against evil.

Daniel encountered God and fell on his face on the ground. A hand touched him and set him trembling on his hands and knees.

He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.

God made humans to stand on the earth. This is our correct posture. “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

We are free people because God has set us free. We stand on earth to represent the Lord in heaven. And we stand against evil with God’s armor.

Birds

Just look at those birds. Not the eagles. Not the hummingbirds. The sparrows. How do they live? Jesus says his Father feeds them.

They don’t save food, so they go out everyday. Maybe a kid dropped a cookie in the back yard.

Somehow, they eat enough to fly around.

God knows we need food everyday. He made us that way. Jesus told us to just ask. “Give us this day the food we need.”

James says,
“You do not have because you do not ask God.”

Do we thank God for taking care of us or do we assume He will. Gratefulness should characterize us.

Jesus says, “Ask for anything I would ask for and you will have it.” Anything? Really? Of course, we have to think about the “I would” part.

Experience

Those who have not had an experience with God sometimes think that religion is accepting a list of beliefs.

This is not helped by churches that publish a pamphlet called “What We Believe”

beliefs

Contrast this with Jesus saying “Follow me”.

But we must be clear about what we believe. There is heresy out there!

This may be part of the frame, but where is the picture?

“Who do people say that I am?

They said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus says that the Father in heaven revealed this to Peter. Nathaniel had a similar experience. But this was not a requirement to begin following Jesus. This is the work of the Spirit. To reveal more about this man, the Son of Man, to the human heart.

The Eye of the Beholder

It is said that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” But the perception of color is in the retina of that beholder.

We say, “The ball is red.”

red-ball

But the ball absorbs all the colors except red, like green. So we see a red ball. And all the different colors in the world.

rainbow

All this takes place inside of your eye. How did your eye know about colors?

Is there another explaination than this: God created the human eye.

This is only one of the marvels of the body. There are many. We are gifted with abilities from birth like sight.

But God wants to give us more. He wants us to have eternal life and spiritual gifts. Jesus made this possible. And he gives the Holy Spirit to those who follow him.
